Cohabitation and separation disputes

Cohabitation and separation disputes

At the start of a relationship, if you are considering moving in with your partner into a property either one of you already owns or into a property you are purchasing together, it can be helpful to enter into a Cohabitation Agreement. This type of agreement can ensure greater transparency and certainty about your legal position, preventing costly disputes should the relationship break down in the future.

If you have separated from your partner the only claims you are likely to have will relate to either the financial support required for your children or a claim upon any property (whether jointly or solely owned). The law around property ownership is complicated and requires specialist advice.

If you have children, they are likely to be your most important consideration. In addition to the expert advice we can provide about the arrangements, it is also important to consider the financial support you may need. There are a number of different claims that can be made to help meet your children’s needs.

Every family is different and therefore specialist and tailored advice is crucial to ensuring your understanding of your situation, whether at the start of a cohabiting relationship or at the end.
